Once results are out in the central system there is nothing left for you to do. Selection is mechanical — your SSC result and the order you gave, and nothing else. So the list is the one thing you genuinely control.
Most students treat it as a wish list, though, and write down the ten best-known names. This page is about why that is risky and what a list that actually works looks like.
How selection works — get the rule straight first
The system reads your list from the top. If your GPA and the seat maths work out at the first college, you are placed there and nothing below is considered. If not, it moves to the second, then the third.
Two things follow, and both matter. First, putting a hard college at the top costs you nothing — if it misses, the next one is read. Second, if there is nothing easy at the bottom, the list can simply run out, and then you are selected nowhere.
Build the list in three bands
A list that works tends to look like this — ambition at the top, realism in the middle, safety at the bottom.

The bottom band is the one people leave out, and the one that matters most. Without those two or three names, a bad year can leave a whole phase empty.
Shift, version and group each count as a choice
This is a rule people learn late. A college’s morning and day shifts are two separate choices; so are its Bangla medium and English version; so are Science and Business Studies.
Two colleges with all their shifts and versions can therefore consume your ten slots outright. So decide deliberately: do you want the college, or that particular shift?
- If the college is what you want, list several of its shifts — that raises your odds of getting in there.
- If the shift is what you need — for the commute, say — list only that one and spend the rest on other colleges.
How many colleges to list
In the 2026-27 session you may list between 5 and 10 colleges, in phase 1 and phase 2 alike, and one application fee covers all of them. Listing more costs nothing extra, and listing fewer saves nothing.
This year’s first phase showed what a short or lopsided list costs: 14,415 applicants got no college, 2,205 of them with a GPA of 5, while a large share of the country’s seats stayed empty. So the general advice is to use the maximum and keep a few near-certain colleges at the bottom. A longer list only improves the chance of landing somewhere, and it does not weaken your higher choices in any way.

No. The list is read from the top, so what sits below never affects your consideration at the first choice. The lower names only come into play once the higher ones have missed.
Then unless your GPA is exceptional there is a real chance of being selected nowhere, and you go into the next phase — by which time seats at the good colleges have thinned out.
You can — one or two, right at the top. It costs nothing and risks nothing. Just make sure the lower part of the list has colleges your GPA actually reaches.
If the college itself is the goal, yes — two shifts improve your odds there. Remember it spends two of your ten slots, though.
A group is added as its own choice, and which groups are open to you depends on what you took at SSC. Science can move in any direction; the reverse is not allowed.
