Bangladesh Maritime University (BMU) is the country's only public maritime university — built to teach ocean science, ship design, maritime law and port management. Established by an act of 2013, it began teaching in 2015 and describes itself as the third maritime university in South Asia.
An ordinance in February 2025 changed its name from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University to the current one. Classes run at a temporary campus in Pallabi, Mirpur-12, Dhaka; the permanent campus is planned at Hamidchar, Chattogram.
The five programmes that admit students
Seven faculties and about 40 departments are listed on paper, but only these five programmes admitted undergraduates in 2025-26. Each takes 40 students, so classes are small and contact with teachers is close.

Why a maritime university
- Naval architecture leads into shipbuilding, ship classification societies and offshore projects — very few institutions in the country teach it.
- Graduates in port management and logistics are sought by Chattogram, Mongla and Payra ports, shipping lines and freight forwarders.
- Maritime law covers sea boundaries, merchant shipping and maritime disputes — narrower than a general LLB, in a field with far less competition.
- Oceanography and marine fisheries connect to research on Bay of Bengal resources, climate and the blue economy; the university also runs an Institute of Bay of Bengal & Bangladesh Studies.
- The whole degree costs under BDT 100,000 — a specialised degree at public-university prices.
The admission rules in brief
The three science programmes (oceanography, fisheries, naval architecture) need a GPA of 4.00 in each of SSC and HSC plus "A" grades in named subjects; law and port management take any stream at 3.50. The test is a 100-mark MCQ; merit is 70% MCQ, 20% HSC and 10% SSC. Dated schedules and the full rules are on the 2026-27 page.
The affiliated Marine Academies
The Bangladesh Marine Academies in Chattogram, Barishal, Pabna, Rangpur and Sylhet, the Marine Fisheries Academy in Chattogram and the private International Maritime Academy are affiliated to BMU. They teach the Bachelor of Maritime Science (Nautical), marine engineering and marine fisheries — the route to becoming a ship's officer — but admit through their own notices.
