Kabi Nazrul Government College stands at 1 Municipality Street, Laxmibazar, in Old Dhaka. Its roots go back to 1874, when it opened as the "Dhaka Madrasa", paid for from the endowment of Haji Muhammad Mohsin — the Mohsin Fund. It changed form several times over the next century and took its present name, after the national poet, in 1972.

As of 26 September 2026 we had not found new figures from the college for 2026-27, so they are shown as last year's.

About Kabi Nazrul Government College
The college's own history records each step. In 1915 the madrasa became a High Madrasa; in 1916 its Anglo-Persian department split off to become Dhaka Government Muslim High School; in 1923 the institution became the Islamic Intermediate College. The madrasa section was abolished in 1962, the school section was separated in 1968 and the college was renamed Government Islamia College — which, in 1972, after independence, became Kabi Nazrul Government College.
Today it is far larger than its Class XI–XII section. According to the college's website it has about 21,000 students, 109 teachers and some 30,000 library books. At higher-secondary level it teaches all three groups — Science, Humanities and Business Studies — and above that it runs honours and master's courses across arts, science and business: Bangla, English, Philosophy, History, Islamic History, Islamic Studies, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Arabic and Physical Exercise; Physics, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, ICT and Geography; Accounting, Finance & Banking, Marketing and Management.
At honours and master's level the college is one of the capital's seven colleges. From February 2017 to January 2025 those seven were affiliated to the University of Dhaka; they now sit under Dhaka Central University. For a Class XI–XII student this means classes and the HSC examination run under the Dhaka Education Board, while the campus itself is shared with a very large undergraduate and postgraduate population.
Its location is a distinguishing feature too. Most of Dhaka's much-discussed colleges sit in the newer city — Dhanmondi, Uttara, Tejgaon, the cantonment. For a student in Old Dhaka the daily journey there is long and costly, and a government college in Laxmibazar means two years without it.
