The Third Phase — Whether It Happens, and Making It Count

As of 26 September 2026, no third phase has been announced for the 2026-27 session. Phase 2 is under way, with applications from 27 September 2026 (Sunday) to 28 September 2026, 8:00 PM. Last session did run a third phase, so one may follow this year too — but until the board says so, it is a possibility, not a plan.
If a third phase does run, it has a different character from the two before it. The question is no longer which college is best but how to make sure you are enrolled at all this year. That shift is hard for a strong candidate to accept, yet in a final round realism is the only strategy that works.
Do not wait on a third phase
Skipping phase 2 in the hope of a third round is the biggest risk available. The announcement may never come, and if it does, phase-2 admissions will have taken much of what was left. If you are eligible, apply in phase 2.
If a third phase is announced, the notice will appear on the board and admission portal, and this page will be updated with its dates.
What is genuinely left at this point
It helps to think of the third phase’s seats in three groups. Understanding them keeps expectations realistic and stops you wasting entries.

How to build the list this time
The balance recommended in earlier rounds — some reaches, some matches, some safe choices — no longer applies. In the third phase the list should be effectively all safe choices.
Put the colleges where your result is clearly above the historical intake at the top. Anything uncertain goes at the very bottom, or comes off entirely.
Distance from home, the shift and the daily commute matter more here too, because whatever you get in this round is where you will spend two years — there is little migration left to move you.

If none of the phases works out
Every year some students finish the phases without a place. It is not rare and it is not the end of their education — but it is worth knowing the alternatives in advance, because several of them have deadlines of their own.
- Technical board diplomas and the vocational HSC — a separate admission process on its own timetable.
- The Alim programme under the madrasah board — an equivalent certificate, admitted through its own portal.
- The open university’s HSC programme, for students balancing study with other responsibilities.
- Applying again next session — your SSC result stays the same, so the change that matters is a better-built list.
Frequently asked questions
Once the phases set out in the policy are done, the central process is over. In some years the board has issued a notice for an extra round where seats remained, but that is not a rule — do not plan around it.
You start a little late, since classes will already have begun. The HSC syllabus runs two years, though, and most colleges spend the first weeks on foundational chapters — a few days is recoverable.
It depends on why. Switching purely to secure a seat means two years of subjects you did not choose, and it changes which degrees are open to you afterwards. The decision is about your future, not about a seat.
The selection lapses just as in earlier rounds — but this time there is no next phase. If you are selected in the third round, the confirmation deadline is the most important date on your calendar.
