SUST A Unit Admission 2026-27: Question Pattern, 985 Seats and Departments

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) holds its 2026-27 admission tests on 26 and 27 January 2027 (Ittefaq); which unit falls on which day has not been announced. The A unit is for science students only and had 985 seats across 19 departments in 2025-26. The paper is an 80-mark MCQ lasting ninety minutes: twenty marks each of physics, chemistry and maths are compulsory, plus twenty of either biology or English.

For 2025-26 the entry conditions were a combined SSC and HSC GPA of 6.5, at least 3.0 in each, and at least 3.0 in HSC maths. Applications reached 52,823 — about 53.6 per seat.

The A unit question pattern

Choosing biology or English is really choosing departments. To be considered for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (GEB) or Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB), you must answer biology. Everyone else should ask which subject yields more reliable marks out of twenty.

The prospectus says nothing about negative marking or a pass mark, so we assume neither; read the admit card and exam instructions. Architecture (A2) adds a one-hour, 30-mark section where you need at least 40% — twelve marks.

Eligibility and the GPA marks

Twenty merit marks come from GPA, but the two batches are converted differently. For HSC 2024 candidates the GPA total is multiplied by 1.6, capping them at 16, while HSC 2025 candidates can reach the full 20 — in effect a four-mark penalty for a second attempt. • Science stream; HSC 2024 or 2025, SSC 2022 or 2023 (SSC 2020/21 for diploma holders).
• SSC + HSC GPA totalling 6.5, at least 3.0 in each; at least 3.0 in HSC maths.
• Department rules: at least 3.0 in the relevant HSC subjects — physics and maths for CSE and EEE; biology, chemistry and maths for GEB, BMB and FET.

The 19 departments and their seats (2025-26)

So many departments behind one test — from CSE to tea technology, oceanography to petroleum — is the A unit’s biggest draw. Allocation combines merit rank, your preference order and the subject conditions above, so check each department’s rule against your own HSC grades before you rank them. The university also has 77 reserved seats beyond these.

Competition last cycle

The A unit drew 52,823 applications for 985 seats in 2025-26 — about 53.6 per seat, well above the B unit’s roughly 38 that year. It sat on the afternoon of 13 January 2026 at centres in Sylhet and Dhaka, although architecture candidates had to test in Sylhet.

For 2026-27 SUST stays outside the cluster and tests in late January, after many science students have already sat several other tests — so keeping your preparation sharp to the end is the challenge.

A strategy for the A unit

1. Eighty questions in ninety minutes is roughly 67 seconds each; build speed on definition- and formula-based MCQs straight from the HSC textbooks.
2. Settle the fourth subject early: biology if GEB or BMB is the aim; otherwise sit two mocks, one with each, and keep the one that scores higher.
3. For numerical maths and physics items, practise mental arithmetic and estimation — ninety minutes leaves no room for full working.
4. For architecture, two one-hour drawing sessions a week plus general knowledge of well-known buildings and architects.
5. Work out your GPA marks in advance so you know what test score puts your target department within reach.
