GST D Unit Admission 2026-27: A Separate Architecture Test on 20 March

The 2026-27 GST timetable carries a new name: the D unit, architecture. It sits on 20 March 2027 from 3 to 4 PM — the commerce C unit has the morning slot that day, and the science A unit follows a week later on 27 March. On the published schedule, architecture appears to be testing as a unit in its own right for the first time.

Last year the arrangement was different. In 2025-26 architecture was reached through an extra drawing test, taken for an added fee by A unit candidates on the afternoon of the A unit test. Of the 1,546 who sat that drawing test, only 140 passed. Eligibility, the mark split and seats for the new D unit have not been announced.

The D unit’s marks — what is known and what is not

We found no reliable breakdown of the drawing test’s marks, so we are not inventing one. A one-hour slot of its own suggests the heart of the test is still hand drawing; whether an A unit score will also count towards architecture is the biggest open question this year.

Who will be able to sit

Up to 2025-26 an architecture candidate first had to qualify for A — under the 2024-25 rule, 3.50 in each of SSC and HSC and 7.50 combined. With D now separate the condition could change, and whether students outside the science stream will be admitted is for the circular to decide.

C in the morning and D in the afternoon on 20 March do not clash. For science students who also sit A on 27 March, though, the drawing practice has to be finished first, a week before their main paper.

Last year’s architecture test in numbers

More than half the applicants never showed up, and fewer than one in eleven of those who did passed. A top score of 50 shows how hard the drawing paper is marked. Before you register for D, ask yourself honestly whether you have been sketching regularly for the last three months.

Getting ready for a drawing test

• At least one perspective sketch a day — a room, a street, a staircase — in one-point and two-point perspective.
• Light and shade: learn to show in pencil how an object’s shadows change as the light moves around it.
• Drawing from memory: practise sketching a familiar building or market scene in twenty minutes without looking.
• Split the hour: spend the first five minutes only on composition before committing a line.
