BMU FEOS Unit Admission 2026-27: Oceanography and Marine Fisheries

Of the four admission tests at Bangladesh Maritime University (BMU), only the Faculty of Earth and Ocean Science (FEOS) puts biology on the paper. The 2026-27 circular had not appeared by 26 September 2026; in 2025-26 the FEOS test ran on 31 January 2026 from 10:00 to 11:30 AM — a 100-mark MCQ, twenty marks each from English, maths, physics, chemistry and biology. Only science students may apply, and they need GPA 4.00 or higher in SSC and in HSC separately.

Past the test lie two four-year honours programmes, BSc (Hons) Oceanography and BSc (Hons) Marine Fisheries, with 40 seats each in 2025-26. Teaching happens on the temporary campus at Pallabi, Mirpur-12, Dhaka. Because BMU is the only public maritime university in the country, this single test is effectively the public-sector doorway to studying the ocean itself and the fish in it.

The FEOS paper: five subjects at twenty marks each

Where the engineering faculty (FET) sets ICT, FEOS sets biology — that one subject is the whole difference between the two papers. A wrong answer costs a quarter mark, so four blind guesses cancel one honest answer. A hundred questions in ninety minutes leaves fifty-four seconds apiece; if you cannot rule out two options, skipping is usually the better bet.

Who could apply (2025-26 conditions)

The subject-grade rule catches more applicants than the GPA floor does: a perfect 5.00 overall still fails if one HSC subject shows a C. Go through your mark sheet line by line before paying. The 2025-26 fee was Tk 800 per faculty, so pairing FEOS with the afternoon FET test on the same day meant two applications and Tk 1,600.

HSC 2024 candidates were eligible in 2025-26, so BMU did allow a second attempt. Whether the pass years simply roll forward by one for 2026-27 is something only the new circular can confirm.

The two programmes, seats and costs (2025-26)

On the 2025-26 fee structure, a full eight-semester degree in either subject came in under Tk 94,000, and the two differ by just Tk 500 and five credits. So choose on interest, not price: oceanography leans towards the physics and chemistry of the sea, marine fisheries towards living marine resources and how they are managed.

How competitive it was last cycle

BMU does not publish applicant counts by faculty. The latest university-wide figure is from 2024-25: roughly 18,000 applicants for 200 seats, about ninety per place.

The more useful signal for FEOS is how far down the list the university reached. In 2025-26 ranks 1 to 480 were called to pre-register for the 80 seats — six ranks for every place. Further calls followed on 5 March, 23 April, 22 June and 30 June 2026, so a rank a little beyond 480 was not a lost cause.

Preparing for FEOS specifically

1. Biology: both HSC papers, with extra hours on animal diversity, fish and aquatic organisms, and ecology — the chapters nearest to what the two programmes teach.
2. Physics and chemistry: an equal twenty each. Drill formula-based MCQs on fluids, heat and waves, and on solutions and chemical equilibrium, until they take seconds rather than minutes.
3. Maths: only listed Casio models such as the fx-991ES were allowed in the hall, so practise on exactly the calculator you will carry in.
4. English: plenty of science students neglect these twenty marks; half an hour a day on grammar and vocabulary opens a real gap over them.
5. In the final three weeks, sit full ninety-minute mocks and score them with the negative marking applied.
