CUET Group A Admission 2026-27: Engineering and URP, a 500-Mark Test

Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) holds its 2026-27 admission test on 23 January 2027, tentatively. Group A admits to the engineering departments and to Urban and Regional Planning (URP), and carries 500 marks (Shiksha Sangbad, 19 September 2026). The university has 931 seats in total. Eligibility is awaiting Academic Council approval, so who may apply is not settled yet.

The last cycle’s shape is known: in 2025-26 only HSC 2025 candidates could apply, the top 16,000 by HSC maths, physics, chemistry and English grades were shortlisted, and the test ran on 17 January 2026 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM as an MCQ. CUET itself speaks of “groups”, not units.

Group A marks

The 500-mark total comes from 2026-27 reporting; the 150-150-150-50 subject split exists only in admission guides and is unconfirmed. If it holds, the three sciences weigh exactly the same — unlike tests where maths dominates on its own — so a weak subject costs you more here than elsewhere.

Eligibility: last cycle’s rules and the trend

Side by side, the two years point one way: the grade-point bar dropped from 17.5 to 14.00, yet the shortlist shrank from 20,000 to 16,000. Applying got easier; getting a seat in the hall got harder. Biomedical Engineering (BME) also required HSC biology at 4.00 or above, and O/A-level candidates needed an A in maths, physics and chemistry. Repeat candidates were not admitted.

Seats and departments

In 2025-26 CUET’s 931 seats were spread over 12 departments, including 11 reserved places (1 for Rakhine candidates, 10 for other ethnic minorities). Reporting for 2026-27 gives the same 931. Group A covers the engineering departments and URP; architecture sits separately under Group B. We have not verified the per-department split, so it is not shown — use the seat table in the circular.

How tough the competition is

In 2025-26 the 931 seats were contested by a shortlist of 16,000 — roughly one place for every seventeen people in the hall. The real filter comes before the test, though: outside the top 16,000 on four HSC subjects, you never reach the exam at all.

There is no combined CKRUET test for 2026-27; CUET is testing on its own. That means a separate application and a separate shortlist — a bad day at KUET or RUET leaves a complete second chance here.

Preparing for Group A

1. Surviving the shortlist: before eligibility is announced, total your own HSC grade points in maths, physics, chemistry and English and see where you would sit against last year’s 16,000.
2. Equal time on the three sciences: split each day three ways, because with equal weights your weakest subject is what drags the rank down.
3. MCQ speed: 2025-26 was a two-hour MCQ; since the switch away from written papers, timed MCQ practice is worth more than older written question banks.
4. English (50): grammar and vocabulary — lighter, but when everyone is close on the sciences, this is where gaps open.
5. The date is tentative — plan travel and lodging around the KUET and RUET dates early if your centre is in Chattogram.
